The Special Interview By TVB Hong Kong

Dato Ong Ang Pieu, A Well-known Artist, Used His Fingers To Supervise The Building Of The Golden Dragon.

The contract to build the longest golden dragon in the world, being a grand construction, is difficult and full of challenges. However, our contractor, Dato Ong Ang Pieu possesses extraordinary capabilities. He built the dragon Structure without using computerized calculation and structural draft, but using only his fingers to control the whole process of the construction process daily. This extraordinary ability is only possessed by Dato Ong who is a gifted artist.

Since young, Dato Ong was interested in drawing and reading story books, especially the folklore of China. The subject he liked best was drawing, because only in this subject could he show off his talent. He drew his favourite animals on drawing paper. The one he like best was the dragon. Since he had never set eyes on a dragon, he copied it from books of folklore. The efforts he spent to draw the dragons during his childhood had become the foundation that enables him to become an excellent artist and builder of dragon now.

Dato Ong actually grew up in a family of artist. His father Mr. Ong Zhen-He is a famous artist in the country. Mr. Ong Zhen-He specializes in the artistic project of decorating temples, and is an all-round artist. However, Dato Ong was never boastful about having a well-known father. Instead, he strove to learn to draw and get instruction from his father. He admired his father and hoped that one day he would be a famous artist just like his father. Dato Ong who cherishes big dreams, not only learnt the finer points of art and craft from his father, but also did research on his own at the same time. Days passed by; he not only inherited but also surpassed the skill of his father and was able to develop the Ong’s family career in temple art. Dato Ong started receiving temple-building projects since he was 17. At that time, whether it be a big or small project, he would work relentlessly to complete it. With his attitude of full commitment and rich professional knowledge, his creation received public acclaim and affirmation. In the end, he too became famous.

The stories concerning Dato Ong’s journey of art are many and interesting. Since he started building big and small temples at the age of 17, there are now more than 145 temples throughout Malaysia which are the products of his creativity. Besides that, he has received many more projects which would surely fascinate the public. He possesses great strength, as evident by the record which he had set by completing 2 nine-headed loins a Nirvana Memorial Park in just 36 days, a record which has not yet been broken.

In the year 1996, he was once again invited by Mr. David Kong, Managing Director of Nir-Wama Sdn. Bhd. To man age the project of building the Golden Dragon which measures 1000 feet. Being a perfectionist, it is not surprising that he encountered a lot of pressure a the initial stage of building this dragon. However, he smiled and said, “Although I was under great pressure, this project was very challenging and inspiring and it can be said that it was a challenge to my ability”.

At the preparatory stage, he was always looking for inspiration about the dragon, studying carefully and deeply the symbol of the dragon, its form and style. For example, the golden dragon that possesses 4 claws symbolizes the common citizens, while the golden dragon with 5 claws has a higher status that symbolizes the emperor. From the point of art, he must not only get the colour right but must colour the golden dragon based on its special characteristic, history and background. The most outstanding feature in the whole construction is that, without computerized calculation and without structural draft, he used only his fingers and his special talent in the craft of Nirvana Golden Dragon and extraordinary inspiration to control the whole construction.

The Golden Dragon measuring 1000 feet is the longest dragon sculpture in the world. The interior of the dragon is beautifully and sacredly decorated. It contains more than 6000 compartments for ash urns and is equipped with air conditioning system and high-tech advanced laser system. It can be said that the Golden Dragon is the most excellent man-made dragon. As a contractor and designer of Golden Dragon, Dato Ong feels very fortunate and proud of it, and regards it as one brilliant achievement. He hopes that in future he will receive projects, which are grand and challenging to him, so that he will achieve a higher level of success.
